Upcoming events

Cross Country will participate in time trials on the Homer Spit on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Volleyball: Varsity volleyball plays Tuesday, Sept. 19 at Nikiski Middle-High School, and at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday, Sept. 21 at Joe Redington Jr/Sr High School. Junior Varsity volleyball plays at a tournament in Wasilla on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16, at Nikiski on Tuesday, Sept. 19, and at 5 p.m. at Joe Redington next Thursday. The C Team plays in a tournament at Colony on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16, at Nikiski on Sept. 19 and at Joe Redington at 4 p.m. Sept. 21.

Football: The Mariners will play at home against Nikiski at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. There are not enough JV players for the 11 a.m. game on the same day, but a fifth quarter will be played after the varsity game to give younger students playing time.

Swim/Dive: Divers will participate in a meet at Kenai Central High School on Friday, Sept. 15. Swimmers will participate in a meet at Kenai Central High School at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16.

Homer High School

Cross Country: The girls and boys Homer Cross Country teams competed in the Frank Dieckgraeff Invitational in Seward on Friday, Sept. 8. Senior Jacob Davis claimed first for the varsity boys team in the 5,000 meter race with a time of 17:38, and sophomore Autumn Daigle claimed second for the girls team with a time of 20:06.

The boys junior varsity team came in third at the event behind Soldotna and Seward with 53 points. Individual times for the junior varsity boys race: 6. Ethan Anderson, 19:59; 11. Travis Coffey, 20:51; 13. Andy Super, 20:59; 17. Peter Sythe, 21:32; 23. Hunter Patton, 22:58; and 36. Ancil Chandlier, 30:34.

The girls cross country team came in first with 28 points. Individual times are as follows: 2. Autumn Daigle, 20:06; 3. Alex Moseley, 20:52; 5. 9 Brooke Miller, 21:32; 7. Sienna Carey, 22:31; 11. Harmony Davidson, 24:14; 18. Anahi Ochoa, 29:09; and 19. Ellie Syth, 30:08.

The varsity boys team came in second with 40 points, behind Soldotna and in ahead of Seward. Individual race times: 1. Jacob Davis, 17:38; 2. Luciano Fasulo, 17:39; 4. Jordan Beachy, 17:57; 15. Denver Waclawski, 19:11; 17. Clayton Beachy, 19:26; 18. Mose Hayes, 19:31; 20. Dexter Lowe, 20:10.

Volleyball: The varsity volleyball team had three straight conference matches at home this past week, one of which they won. They lost to Houston High School 3-2 on Thursday, Sept. 7. Houston won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-17. Homer won the third and fourth sets 25-22 and 25-23, and Houston claimed the win in the final set 15-8.

On Friday, Sept. 8, Homer topped the team from Joe Redington Jr/Sr High School by winning the first three sets in a row. They beat the Huskies 25-8, 26-24 and 25-14. In Saturday’s match against Grace Christian High School, the Mariners fell 26-24, 25-20 and 25-11.

Football: The Homer Mariners varsity football team topped Seward High School on Saturday, Sept. 9 in an away game 45-0. This was the fourth straight win for the Mariners, who had a total of nine completed passes in Saturday’s game a rushed a total of 168 yards.

Swim/Dive: The Homer Swim and Dive teams competed at the Homer Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9. For the girls swim teams, Homer came in fourth with 45 points. Kodiak High School took first with 113 points, Soldotna High School took second with 80, and Colony High School came in third with 63. Kenai Central High School fell just below Homer in fifth place with 22 points, and Unalaska Raiders Swim took sixth with one point.

Among the boys teams, Homer came in fifth out of eight, with 29 points. Kodiak took first with 128 points, SoHi second with 52, Colony third with 47, Kenai Central fourth with 39, Unalaska Raiders sixth with 19, Seward High School seventh with seven points and Cordova High School eighth with six points.

Homer Middle School:

Cross-Country — Middle school runners from Homer competed in the Kenai Invitational on Friday, Sept. 8 along with Kenai, Skyview, Seward, Aurora Borealis, Nikiski and Nikolaevsk. Coach Jen Booz brought 13 runners to the first meet. One runner, eighth grader Kailin Anderson, placed 6th with a time of 9:40 in the 1.5 mile race.

“It was a sunny day and all of my runners performed well,” she wrote in an email.
