Zak Krom

Zak Krom, 24, died June 25, 2015, near Naknek. A memorial is at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at the Seafarers Memorial on the Homer Spit. A reception follows at 4 p.m. at the Best Western Bidarka Inn.

“Please come and honor Zak with laughter and love. Bring your best Zak stories,” his family said.

Elizabeth Ann Johnson

Nov. 1, 1938-July 15, 2015

Homer educator Elizabeth Ann Johnson, 76, died of natural causes at her home on July 15, 2015. A memorial service for Liz is at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at Faith Lutheran Church. There will be time for sharing memories with her family.

She was born Nov. 1, 1938, in Longview, Wash., to the Carters. Liz was raised in Washington and Oregon. She moved to Homer with her husband, Bill, and two Irish setters in 1965.

Kathleen Margaret Patsch Walls

Devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Kathleen Walls, 66, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family on July 24, 2015, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage after a lengthy illness.

Born Kathleen Margaret Patsch, April 13, 1949, in Klamath Falls, Ore., to parents Margaret Miller Patsch and Max Patsch, Kathleen was the youngest of seven children. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Klamath in 1967. 

Sandra J. Newton

Sandra J. Newton, 77, died July 16, 2015. Her ashes will be spread and memories shared at Bear Creek, a place she had fond memories of.

She is survived by her husband, George (Ray) Newton; her four children, Todd, Mike, Mark and Donald Slaughter; her grandchildren, Chad, Angel, Mathew, Michael, Nichol, Trevor, Teagan, Mischa and Kiano; great grandchildren, Jesse, Caleb, Damien, Dakota, Desiree, Devon, Chase and Lily; and daughters-in-law Cindy, Supatta and Tara. 

Zak Krom

Zak Krom of Homer, Anchorage and Kodiak died June 25, 2015, in Naknek. 

A full obituary and service announcements will be published at a  later date. 

A memorial is planned to be held in Homer.

Christopher S. Dawson

Homer resident Christopher S. Dawson, 53, died Tuesday, June 23, 2015, in Soldotna.

There was a small family wake for Chris and his ashes were spread in Kachemak Bay out of Homer.

Chris was born on Nov. 12, 1961, in Laramie, Wyo.

“Chris will be remembered by his family and friends for his generosity, his sense of humor, his love of music, and his love of the outdoors. We will all miss his kind, supportive, and non-judgmental nature,” his family said.

Robert B. Turkington

Longtime Homer resident Robert B. Turkington, 92, died Monday, July 13, 2015, at home with family by his side.

Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2015, at the Homer Elks Lodge, 215 W. Jenny Lane. Honorary pallbearers are Sean Presley, Daniel Presley, Scott Turkington, Ryan Turkington, Matt Turkington, Vladimir Martushev, Jason Huffman and Braden Huffman.

Gloria Ann Figueroa

Gloria Ann Figueroa, 59, passed away June 10, 2015, at John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek, Calif.

A service to celebrate her life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 19, 2015, at the Karen Hornaday Park Pavilion. 

Frank Mullen

Frank Mullen, 65, died at the UW Medical Center on July 7, 2015, surrounded by his family, after a battle with cancer. 

A celebration of Frank’s life will be held at Soldotna Creek Park at 3 p.m. July 31.

Born in Anchorage on June 1, 1950, Frank was the son of Soldotna homesteaders Frank Sr. and Marge Mullen. He grew up in his family’s small log cabin near where Soldotna Creek empties into the Kenai River. 

John Edward “Ed” Tillman

John Edward Tillman, 48, died at home in Homer on July 10, 2015. 

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2015, at the Bishops Beach Pavilion in Homer. Rev. Lisa Talbott will officiate. His ashes will be scattered in Kachemak Bay.

John, or Ed as he liked to be called, was born Nov. 10, 1966, in San Bernardino, Calif. He was a high school graduate.

Robert Turkington

Longtime Homer resident Robert Turkington, 92, passed away on July 13, 2015, at home with family at his side.  He leaves behind a rich legacy and a lot of family and friends. A full obituary and memorial announcement will follow next week. 

Lee Roy Glover

Longtime Anchor Point homesteader, Mr. Lee Roy Glover, 84, died Thursday, July 2, 2015, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer.

Memorial services were held 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at the Anchor Point Church of the Nazarene, 32710 Augusta Lane – Anchor Point, AK 99556. 

Merle Walter Johnson

Walter Johnson, a pioneering Alaska physician known to many as the father of the Community Health Aide Program, died Saturday, June 27, 2015, surrounded by family at his son’s home in Anchorage. He was 92.  

David “Digger” Lee Guetschow

David “Digger’’ Lee Guetschow, 70, died June 22, 2015.

“He passed on to the realm which awaits every one of us, sooner or later. He would be touched by the tears shed for him, but would rather that he were an inspiration to us to live our lives to the fullest, to enjoy each and every moment with our loved ones, to celebrate this blessing we temporarily possess called existence,” his family said.

Edna B. Fisk

Edna Bernice Fisk of Homer, 94, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, June 28, 2015. Edna was born in Melita, which is now Sterling, Mich., in 1920. As a young woman, Edna was swept off her feet by a serviceman, Toras Fisk, and they were wed in 1943. Toras was the love of her life and they began a wonderful journey together. As adventurous “Pioneers of Alaska,” arriving in Anchorage in 1958, the Fisks finally settled in Homer in 1978.

Merle Walter Johnson, M.D

Merle Walter Johnson, M.D., pioneer Alaska physician known to many as the father of the Community Health Aide Program, died Saturday, June 27, 2015, surrounded by family at his son’s home in Anchorage. He was 92. Gatherings to remember Walter will be held during the third week of July in Homer and in Anchorage, and will be announced. A full obituary will follow.

Debra “Debbie” Beth Eayrs

On Father’s Day, June 21, 2015, Debra “Debbie” Beth Eayrs, 64, died.  “Loving wife, best friend, mother and grandmother, she was called home to her heavenly father,” her family said. Debbie had suffered from a lung disease for many years, the last 10 of which had become increasingly difficult, with her final three days spent at South Peninsula Hospital. 

Edna Farsdahl

Edna Farsdahl, also known as “Grandma” to many, died Tuesday, June 16, 2015, in her own home surrounded by her family. She lived to be 102 years old.

Born in 1913 in Makoti, N.D., Edna grew up on a farm with five brothers and sister. Each day began with milking eight cows.
