He was born March 1, 1949, in Odessa, Texas. He attended Permian High School and graduated in 1967. 

Roy’s mom, Mattie V. Baskin, always insisted that he be addressed as Roy V. because his father’s name also was Roy.

Homer resident Thomas Phillip Greenwell, 75, died peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015. Tom was born May 22, 1940, outside of Bardstown, Ky. Tom was raised and graduated high school in Fern Creek, Ky., and served in the U.S. Army as a medical technician during the Vietnam War.

Former Homer resident Sara B. Peterson died Oct. 23, 2015, at Revere Court Memory Care Facility in Sacramento, Calif., of natural causes, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 86 years old. She was born June 8, 1929, in North Braddock, Pa., and raised in Snow Shoe, Pa., the only girl with six brothers.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Normandin; son, Jesse, and daughter, Traci, all of Happy Valley.

A Homer High School graduate died in a recreational skydiving accident in Hollister, Calif., Oct. 11, 2015. 

Tech Sgt. Nathan Schmidt, age 38, was a “legendary pararescue airman with the California Air National Guard,” wrote Jeff Schogol in the Air Force Times.

His parents are Calvin and Debra Schmidt of Homer.

Andrew Keith “Andy” Nelson, 76, of Clovis, N.M., died Friday, Oct. 9, 2015. “He went to be with the Lord,” his family said.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2015. at The Saint Herman of Alaska Russian Orthodox Church in Port Graham.  She will be laid to rest at the Port Graham Cemetery.

Mark F. Handrich, 66, of Green Lake, Wis., died unexpectedly on Oct. 20, 2015, at his home. He was born Aug. 3, 1949, at Berlin Memorial Hospital, Berlin, Wis., to Shirley (Radtke) and Wilfred Handrich. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church of Berlin and attended St. John Lutheran School through 8th grade, graduating from Berlin High School in 1967.

John J. Lind, 70, of Cambridge, Minn., died Oct. 9, 2015, in Cambridge. He was born Sept. 11, 1945.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Axel and Lola Lind; brother, David, and sister, Lorraine Balthazor. 

He moved his family to Homer for two years (1978-1980) to attend Alaska Bible Institute.

Longtime Anchor Point resident John Paul Sweeney Jr., 66, died Sept. 23, 2015, in Gaston, Ore., with his wife Lyn at his side. Memorial services will be held in November in Oregon at a time and place to be announced.

Homer resident Johnny Ulrich, 59, passed away Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at South Peninsula Hospital from liver cancer.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Homer.  Father Bob Leising, OMI, will officiate.

 Johnny was born Oct. 8, 1956, in Oceanside, N. Y. He graduated high school and worked as a heavy equipment operator before moving to Homer in September 2007.

Anchor Point resident Shayne Clinton Baringer passed from this life in Anchorage on Oct. 13, 2015.

A memorial service will take place at Glacier View Baptist Church in Homer at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015.  Pastor Rick Wise will officiate.  Following the memorial, there will be a potluck dinner at the Homer Elks Lodge, for a continued celebration of Shayne’s life.

Francesca “Frances” Ann Colombo, 88, died Aug. 29, 2015, at Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C. She became ill while attending a family reunion in North Carolina.

An intimate ceremony for family was held on Sept. 5, 2015, in New Bern, N.C. A celebration of life will be held in Homer at a time to be announced via family contacts or Francesca’s commemorative website.

Alan Robert Kelly, 59, died Sept. 12, 2015, at Providence Anchorage Medical Center of a massive stroke.

“Known both as Alan and Kelly, he was a people person who made friends easily and kept them for life,” his family said.

A gathering was held to celebrate his life prior to spreading his ashes on the waters of the Anchor River, one of his favorite fishing spots.
