Glacier Kings Peewee team wins tourney

The Homer Glacier Kings Peewee Tier 3 team beat Fairbanks 4-2 Sunday for its third Presidents Day Invitational Hockey Tournament championship in four years.

In round robin play, Homer beat the Eagle River Mustangs, the Palmer Pioneers, and the U14 girls team from the Anchorage Hockey Association.

The Homer team’s only loss in the tournament came to Fairbanks, 0-1 on Saturday, when Fairbanks scored with 3 minutes remaining to break a 0-0 tie late in the third period.

In the crossovers, Homer defeated the Anchorage Comets to reach the finals. This set up a rematch of Saturday’s game with Fairbanks, but this time Homer won the game 4-2.

All three of the last fours years’ championship games have seen Homer beat Fairbanks in the finals.

The HHA Squirts C team also participated in the tournament, which was sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of Alaska. The Homer Squirts beat the South Anchorage Mighty Moose and the Wasilla Wild teams to win in their conference of six teams, which earned them a spot in the quarter semi-finals. They lost in the first round of quarter semi-finals.
