Homer middle school students shine at math meet

A total of 102 sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students from around the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District converged on Homer Middle School on Thursday, May 5th, for the 10th annual KPBSD Middle School Math Meet. Homer Middle School students stood their ground against tough competition from Kenai Middle School students.

The first round, an individual sprint round with many short questions, was dominated by Kenai Middle School, who took three of the top four spots. The second round was a slower target round with more difficult multi-step problems. Homer Middle students overcame the competition in the target round with Micah Mershon taking first, Jonathan Raymond securing third, and Ben Coble coming up in fourth place.

After the intense individual competitions, the team round took place with students being grouped up with kids from other schools in teams of four. Top Homer students in the team round include Daniel Reutov, Emma Sulczinski, Karmyn Gallios, Austin Cline, Zoe Adkins, Olivia Cunningham, Gus Roelov, and Alec Rhodes.

In the final round, a game show-style countdown round with two students going head-to-head, Larry Dunn was the top finisher from Homer, ending with a third place finish.
