As three Homer Police officers stood by observing, the recount of the Homer City Council began with fourth-place Homer City Council candidate Justin Arnold laboriously examining and hand counting ballots. In the photo above, Arnold looks at the ballots as deputy clerk Melissa Jacobsen watches.
Homer Police Lt. Will Hutt said police came at the request of the clerk’s office when Arnold got into a discussion with City Clerk Jo Johnson about the recount process.
After consulting with city attorney Tom Klinkner, Johnson said Arnold would be allowed to examine ballots and do his own hand count. Arnold’s hand count will not be official, and the recount will be done using voting machines.
Also observing the process were council candidates Corbin Arno, Bryan Zak, council member Barbara Howard and elections officials.
By 2 p.m., Arnold had examined one precinct’s ballots and officials began a machine count.
