The Homer basketball teams swept a pair of Southcentral Conference contests Thursday in Homer. The Homer girls beat Houston 45-20, while the Mariner boys prevailed 46-30 over the Hawks.
Both teams also prevailed during their senior night bouts against Seward on Friday at home.
The results are as follows:
Thursday:
Girls: Homer 11, 9, 11, 14 for a total of 45; Houston 7, 3, 6, 4 for a total of 20.

Boys: Homer 17, 9, 5, 15 for a total of 46; Houston 6, 11, 4, 9 for a total of 30.

The top two teams, the Best Western Riptides and the Bay Weld Smooth Ops, battled it out as the last ones standing in the league’s championship game on Monday night. Best Western won the tight game 51-49.
Wrestling: The following is a snapshot of where the Anchor Kings wrestling team from Chapman School is at so far this season, from Anchor Kings President Conrad Woodhead.
“They say that wrestling doesn’t build character, it reveals it — and for the characters who wrestle for the Anchor Kings Wrestling Club, who are Alaska’s USA Wrestling Division II returning State Champions, the quest for another state championship began this weekend in Seward at the Marathon Miners Wrestling Tournament.
“Lead by head coach Bubba Wells, the Anchor Kings once again showed promise as they produced several champions in both the Freestyle and Greco disciplines. The Newman boys got their season off to a great start, with younger brother, Blake, solidifying first place in Freestyle with a fall (3:05) over Richie French of Anchorage Youth Wrestling Academy in the Novice 81-84 pound championship. Blake also won the Greco tournament when he recorded a fall (3:34) over Benjamin Stegall, Tri-Valley Wrestling, in the championship.
“Older brother, Wayne, earned first place in Freestyle with a technical fall over Jayden Christiansen of the Mat-Su Matmen in the Junior 137-141 pound championship. Wayne finished his weekend with a second place finish in Greco, losing to defending Alaska high school state champion, Gideon Hutchison, of the Soldotna Whalers, 12-18.
“The tenacious Miles Tressler was crowned tournament champion in both Freestyle and Greco. Tressler breezed to victory in both disciplines in the Intermediate 55-58 pound division. Michael Ritter had his hand raised in the Freestyle Schoolboy 78-90 pound division championship, narrowly defeating Anchorage Youth Wrestling Academy wrestler Noah Romesburg, 17-15. In the Greco tournament, Ritter lost in a 14-15 heartbreaker to Zackary Rodman of the Soldotna Whalers.
“Other Freestyle placers included Mischelle Wells, who was the Cadet girls 126-127 pound champion. Her older brother, Kyle, was second place in both Freestyle and Greco in the Junior 189-205 pound division. Landyn Woods received second place in the Intermediate 62-63 pound division in Freestyle, along with first year wrestler Oak Jakmanee in the Novice 104-113 pound division. Placing third in the Freestyle Tournament in the Novice Girls 70-79 pound division was Alysha Nyvall, and Jeramy Fry-Vigue in the Novice 93-96 pound division.
“The Anchor Kings head north this weekend to Skyview Middle School. They practice Monday-Thursdays from 2:45-6 p.m. at Chapman School in Anchor Point, and the team is open to any youth on the Southern Peninsula interested in learning the sport of wrestling. For more information, registration packets and exact practice times can be acquired at the Chapman School office.”
