Upcoming events:
Soccer: The girls soccer team plays Voznesenka tonight at 6 p.m. in Homer. They will also host Palmer at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The boys soccer team will play Palmer at home at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Track and Field: Homer’s track and field team will compete in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Championships on Saturday at Soldotna High School, starting at 10 a.m.
Softball: The varsity softball team will compete in the Blue and Gold Battle in Anchorage over the weekend, with two games on Friday and another two on Saturday. They’ll next play at home on Thursday, May 17 against Soldotna at 6 p.m.
Baseball: The Homer baseball team will play in two away games against Kodiak on Friday and Saturday. They’ll return to play Colony and Wasilla next Thursday and Friday, May 17-18, both at home and both at 6:30 p.m.
In review:
Softball: The Homer softball team beat Kenai Central High School 23-15 in a Northern Lights Conference game Tuesday evening at Jack Gist Park in Honer.
The victory brought the Mariners to 4-0 in the league and 5-7 overall, while the Kardinals fell to 1-4 in the league and 1-6 overall.
Homer started out strong, coming out with a 9-0 lead by the end of the second inning.
The momentum didn’t last, though, and the Kardinals happily came back to end up with a 10-9 lead in the top of the third.
The two teams competed to battle for a solid lead, with Homer tying it up before Kenai eeked out 12-10 lead in the top of the fourth, and a 14-13 lead after the top of the fifth inning.
Homer would scored a solid six runs in the bottom of the fifth and another four in the bottom of the sixth, solidifying their win in the six-inning game.
Homer pitcher Annalynn Brown went 5 2-3 innings for Homer, giving up eight runs and seven hits. Becca Chapman pitched a third of an inning, giving up seven earned runs.
Kenai’s Savannah Jones went 5 1-3 innings, giving up 23 runs and 21 hits while walking five and striking out four Homer players.
On offense for Homer, Brown was 2 for 4 with two runs. Freshman Grace Godfrey was 3 for 5, earning three runs. Junior Briana Hetrick was 2 for 3 with three runs; Kaitlyn Johnson was 3 for 4 with four runs; Ksenia Kuzmin was 2 for 5 with five runs and three runs batted in; Samantha Moonin was 4 for 5 with two runs and four RBIs; and Haylee Owen was 4 for 4 with three runs and five RBIs.
Wrestling: The following is a recap of the Anchor Kings Wrestlers’ performance at the Alaska USA Wrestling Championships, where they earned 25 individual medals:
“Seventeen Anchor Kings Wrestlers tested their mettle against wrestlers from across the state at the Alaska USA Wrestling Championships last week in Wasilla, producing 25 individual medalists, and the third place trophy for Division II Teams in the Cadet through Open divisions in Freestyle. Led by coach Bubba Wells, the Kings showed promise at all levels this season, and looks to build upon that success in the years to come.
Folkstyle
“In the Folkstyle Tournament held on Thursday, May 3, Junior Division wrestler Luciano Fasulo received first place at 138 pounds. Teammate Wayne Newman came in second place in the same bracket. Kyle Wells also came in second place at 220 pounds.
“Jackson Woodhead found himself on the podium for the first time this season, securing fourth place in his first ever Folkstyle Tournament, in the Intermediate 56 pound division. In the Novice 82 pound bracket, Blake Newman received third place. His only loss came from perennial stud, Myles Campbell, of the Arctic Warriors.
“CJ Burns battled hard in the Novice 98 pound division, earning himself a fourth place medal. Also placing in the Folkstyle Tournament was Russell Nyvall, who earned a sixth place finish.
Greco
“Fasulo and Newman found themselves at the top of the podium in the Friday, May 4 Greco Tournament.
“Wells produced another second place finish. Blake Newman dominated his bracket before falling to Campbell again. He finished his day with second place.
“Woodhead entered his first ever Greco Tournament and finished in third place, as well as the tenacious Miles Tressler at the Intermediate 63 pound division. Carter Woodhead ended his second day of wrestling, finishing fourth place in Greco for the second straight year.
Freestyle
“In the Freestyle Tournament on Saturday, May 5, Mariah Grimes took first place at 164 pounds, along with Alex Moseley in the Junior 122 pound division. Fasulo found himself at the top of his bracket as well, garnering his third first-place finish of the weekend, this time at the Junior 132 pound division.
“In the Novice 82 pound bracket, Blake Newman strolled through all his competition, falling only to Campbell for the third straight day.
“Also receiving second place was Chapman standout wrestler Michael Ritter, whose only loss came from Ashton Volkman of the Anchorage Youth Wrestling Academy, in an 8-6 heartbreaker.
“Wayne Newman and Wells finished their weekends with two more second place finishes. First year wrestler, Oak Jakmanee, turned some heads with his fourth place finish. Burns won his second medal of the weekend, garnering sixth place for his efforts in the Freestyle Tournament.
“The Anchor Kings Board of Directors would like to thank Coach Bubba Wells and his slew of assistants who helped make this season possible.
“The Kings close out their season at the end of the year banquet, being hosted on May 19 from 4–6 p.m. at the Slide Hole Campground.”
