Alisa Sands of Lake Stevens, Wash. snatched up the title of derby leader when she caught a 165-pound halibut on July 5. Sands caught the whopper of a fish while fishing with Captain David Bayes on the Grand Aleutian with Central Charters.

Previously, the derby leader was Marcella Kolberg of Palmer, who caught a 142.4-pound halibut on May 29.

Other than Sands’ big catch, the derby waters have been fairly quiet, with only two new fish brought in in the last couple weeks.

Patricia Perkins of Anchorage caught a 2014 tagged fish and won $100 on July 2. Perkins was fishing on a private boat, “Bell Rose.”

Bridger Brewer of Soldotna was out fishing with family on their private boat and caught a 34.4 pound halibut. The 12 year old has been entered into the Kids/Youth drawing, which will be held at the end of the season.

Correction from June 23:

A photo of a 341-pound halibut caught in Cook Inlet on June 14 was mistakenly placed alongside the Jackpot Halibut Derby update, “Derby: First tagged fish of season caught” in the print and online, giving the impression that the halibut was entered in Homer’s halibut derby. The 341-pound halibut is not a part of the Jackpot Halibut Derby, as it was caught outside of the derby area. The Homer News regrets this error and apologizes for any resulting confusion.
