Homer’s varsity volleyball team brought home solid victories this weekend in games against Seward and Redington.
On Friday, Oct. 4, the Lady Mariners won in five sets, defeating the visiting Seahawks 3-2. Head coach Ian Overson called the match “a really hard fought battle.”
Reilly Sue Baker had 17 kills in the game. Channing Lowney had 15. Rebecca Trowbridge had 34 assists.
“It was great to be back in front of our home crowd,” Overson wrote in a text message Monday. “The energy was amazing.”
Homer faced off against Redington in another home game on Saturday, taking the win in three straight sets. The Lady Mariners had 25 points to Redington’s 22 in the first period, 25 to 12 in the second, and 25 to 23 in the final.
Overson wrote that the crowd for Saturday’s game was “much larger than normal,” owing to the team’s senior night, where the senior varsity players were honored prior to the start of the game.
“(It) really was a fun game to watch,” Overson wrote.
Caitlyn Rogers got four aces and Trowbridge, who Overson said was “having an unbelievable night,” had nine during the game. Brightly Thoning had four blocks. Lowney had 11 kills, while Gracie Miotke had 10. In addition to her aces, Trowbridge also had 26 assists.
The varsity team is now 3-1 in conference play and 15-10-7 overall.
The varsity team will travel to Anchorage for the Grace Christian Tourney on Friday.
