Redington wins Mid Alaska shootout against Homer

The visiting Redington football team defeated Homer 56-46 on Friday in Mid Alaska Conference action.

The Huskies move to 3-1 in the league and 4-2 overall, while the Mariners are 2-2 in the league and 3-4 overall. Redington avenged a 32-8 nonconference loss to Homer in the second week of the season.

Homer coach Justin Zank said his team had the lead at the half in the shootout, but that the Huskies did a better job executing in the second half.

“Redington played great,” Zank said. “Costly turnovers on our part, and silly mistakes.”

Zank said CJ Burns had a solid game at quarterback, connecting several times with Justus Grimes for touchdowns. Joaquin Jackson also had a good game at running back, scoring several touchdowns.

The Mariners host Kenai Central at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in a game that will be crucial for playoff seeding. Kenai defeated Homer 21-0 in a nonconference game to open the season.

Zank said his team has lost leads in the second half the last two weeks.

“We seem to be losing leads in the second half, which is a little concerning,” he said. “So if we can figure that out, I’m optimistic. But it’ll be a tough game for us.”
