Last week’s big Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby news was the 335-pound halibut caught by 16-year-old Jackson Hobbs of Franklin, Idaho. This week it’s a 12.6-pound flat fish in the news, brought in by Andrew VanderPlaat of Pendleton, Ore.
While Hobbs has to wait until the derby ends Sept. 15 to see if his barndoor wins this year’s jackpot, VanderPlaat already knows the value of his catch since it was wearing a tag worth $500 sponsored by Tom and Debbie Stroozas of AmericasCuisine.com. VanderPlaat caught the halibut Aug. 21 while fishing with Capt. David Bayes of DeepStrike Sportfishing aboard the Grand Aleutian.
There were no changes in the top 10 fish on the derby leader board this week.
