Olympian wins Kachemak Ski Marathon

The Kachemak Ski Marathon was held Saturday in and around Homer, drawing a pair of skiers who had recently competed in the Winter Olympics.

JC Schoonmaker, who competed in Beijing and skis for the University of Alaska Anchorage, won the 42-kilometer men’s race in 1 hour, 58 minutes, 5 seconds. Anchorage’s Gus Schumacher, who also competed in Beijing, was fourth in the 42K in 1:58:25.

The women’s 42K went to Anchorage’s Astrid Stav, another UAA skier, in 2:06:29. Anchorage also swept the 25K event, with Dante Petri winning the men’s race in 1:34:04, and Nancy Pease, who is in the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame for her mountain running resume, winning the women’s race in 1:43:34.

The 13K went to a pair of Homer skiers — Lia Calhoun in 1:15:30, and Bill Jirsa in 1:04.
