Following three losses in a row in games against Palmer and Soldotna High, Mariner baseball will play home games against Wasilla and Colony on May 13 and 14. Varsity plays at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.

SoHi 1, Homer 0

Soldotna pitchers Caleb Spence and Mathew Daugherty combined on a no-hitter Tuesday in a 1-0 Southcentral Conference victory over host Homer.

“The two pitchers we pitched tonight probably had some of the best pitching of the year,” Soldotna coach Robb Quelland said. “They hit the zone proper and didn’t get upset and allow the umpire to take over the game. They pitched where they were supposed to and took advantage of the batters they faced.”

Homer coach Rich Sonnen also was pleased with the way his staff held down the potent Soldotna attack.

Joe Ravin pitched three innings, Adam Brinster pitched two innings and gave up the lone run, and Garrett Butcher pitched the last two innings.

The run came in the fourth, when Kenny Griffin singled, went to second on a passed ball and went to third on a balk.

Joey Becher then hit a hot grounder to third. Homer elected to take the out at first rather than make the play at the plate.

“We probably could have gotten him at home, but at the time I didn’t worry about it because we’ve been putting up a fair amount of runs,” Sonnen said.

Kolten Wilson was 3 for 3 for the Stars, while Terrance Slats was 2 for 3 and Becher had a double.

Palmer 12, Homer 6

The visiting Mariners dropped to 3-3 in the Southcentral Conference and 3-4 overall with the 6-point loss against Palmer.

Homer had 13 hits to Palmer’s eight, but it was the Moose coming up with the clutch plays on offense and defense.

“We had 13 hits and had 15 guys left on base,” Homer coach Rich Sonnen said. “We left the bases loaded twice.”

Michael Swoboda was 3 for 3 with a solo home run to lead off the game. Adam Brinster was 2 for 3, Garrett Butcher was 2 for 4, Kyle Johnson was 2 for 3, Joe Ravin was 2 for 5, and Landon Bunting and Woape Huffman each had a hit.

Greg Smith got the start and went two innings, giving up six earned runs on six hits while walking two and striking out three.

Garrett Butcher pitched the last four innings, giving up six runs — two earned — on two hits while walking three, hitting three and striking out four.

“We were able to hit their pitcher, but our defense made errors and they made plays when they had to,” Sonnen said.
