After hosting the annual swim team triathlon fundraiser last Saturday, the Mariners on Friday and Saturday welcome swimmers and divers from seven other schools for the Homer Invite.

Approximately 200  athletes from Homer, Soldotna, Kenai, Seward, Palmer, Colony, Kodiak and Unalaska are expected to participate.

Two Homer swimmers to keep an eye on are senior Sergius Hannan, who was the first-place finisher of the triathlon, and junior Lauren Kuhns, who was the first of the female Mariner swimmers to finish. Both of them have been training for swimming over the summer and are the most prepared for a meet this early in the season, said Wil Roedl, who is starting his first year as head coach of the team.

Hannan’s winning triathlon time was 1:52:29. Kuhns finished the event in 2:12:38, in fourth place among the field of 15 women. The first-place finisher for the women was 41-year-old Angie Brennan who finished with a time of 1:55:01.

The triathlon included a 1,000-yard swim, 15-mile bike ride and 5-mile run. 

Four teams of three people plus 32 individual competitors participated in the event. For the first time, all swim team members were required to participate, said Roedl. 

“Now they all know they can do it,” he said.

“It’s a real good team-building experience,” said Roedl. “They trained for it together. They participated together. They were sore Saturday afternoon together. It’s just a great way to bond. It’s a lot less pressure than a swim meet.”

Roedl said he was very pleased with how all the Mariners performed and he’s anticipating good things from the team throughout the season.

“I’m excited to see what they do. I haven’t seen most of these swimmers race. I’m still learning a lot about my team. … They have a good work ethic. They’re a good bunch of young adults who will hopefully take away some good lessons and life skills from swimming and diving this year,” he said.

Homer Invite action gets underway at 4 p.m. Friday with the diving competition. Swimmers take to the pool beginning at 10 a.m. The public is invited.
