The Kachemak Swim Club, KSC, Kings took 18 athletes to the Alaska Junior Olympics (JO) Swim meet at Bartlett High School in Anchorage, April 23-26; the meet drew 500 of the fastest swimmers from the 33 teams in the state with the Kings finishing 15th with 286 points.
Winning the meet was the Aurora Swim Team of Anchorage with 4,559 points, followed by Glacier Swim Club of Juneau (2,859 points) and Northern Lights Swim Club of Anchorage (2,729) points.
Lauren Kuhns was the KSC Swimmer of the Meet. Swimming in the highly competitive girls 15-and-older division, she dropped 9 seconds to place 10th in the 200 breast (2:40.01), and dropped 5 seconds to place 11th in the 100 breast (1:13.29). Both times meet the USA Swimming A time standard achieving “supertaper-swim” status by shaving at least 4 percent off her existing personal record (PR), an achievement she replicated a third time in the 200 back, in which she improved 7 seconds to finish in 2:22.67. She also contributed team points in the 500 free with a 15th place (5:42.86) and joined the Minute Club (breaking 60 seconds in the 100 free) with a 59.39, also a USA Swimming A time.
Ella Blanton-Yourkowski won the girls 11-12 50-yard back in 32.82 to win the KSC Gargantuan Swim Award and bring home the Kings first JO victory in two years. Qualifying for finals in eighth out of eight places, Blanton-Yourkowski promised a big swim in the evening finals and delivered with a supertaper swim characterized by an unprecedentedly high stroke tempo, aggressive turn, and fearless finish to take the race by a tenth of a second.
Also medalling in the meet was the boys 9-10 relay team of Luke Nelson, Lucas Story, Nathan Overson, and Jamen Anderson; they took the bronze in both the 200 free (2:31.82) and 200 medley (2:54.26) relays.
McKenzy Johnson continued her streak of relay PRs, now extending over 5 meets and 13 relay swims, to win the KSC RelayBig Award. Competing in the girls 11-12 division, she dropped 10 seconds in her fly leg of the 400 medley relay (1:36.00), 6 seconds in her leg of the 400 free relay (1:18.13), 4 seconds in her fly leg of the 200 medley relay (38.21), and a second in her leg of the 200 free relay (33.94), the former three swims achieving supertaper-swim status.
