Voznesenka’s lone wrestler, Gavril Kalugin, 132, placed second and scored 20 team points at the Kachemak Conference Wrestling Championships in Nikiski Dec. 6-7. With a season record of 22-9, Kalugin now heads to state.
At the first round of the championship in Nikiski, Kalugin received a bye; in the quarter final, he won by a fall, 3-7, over Garret Bond of Grace Christian in 3:43. In the semi-final, Kalugin won by a decision over Homer’s Tommy Woo, 9-5. Then, in the first-place match against Nathan Carstens of Nikiski, Kalugin reinjured a shoulder that was injured earlier in the season.
“Hopefully we can wrestle well enough at state to place,” said Head Coach Justin Zank.
