Homer’s Kachemak Nordic Ski Club will host their annual ski marathon event with a 42K, 25K and 13K event starting at the Schwiesow Stadium Lookout Trails and ending at the Baycrest Trail system at the Department of Transportation Trailhead on the Sterling Highway on Saturday, March 16.
Participant parking is in the large parking lot at the DOT trailhead off the Sterling Highway. There will be a shuttle bus at DOT in the morning to ferry people from their cars at the finish to the starting point at 7:45 a.m. Bib pickup and day-of registration will occur at Lookout from 8:30-10 a.m.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and top three female finishers in the 42K, 25K and 13K at an after-party/awards ceremony at the Homer Seaplane Base at 1310 LakeShore Drive from 4-6 p.m. Awards ceremonies will start at 5 p.m. Soup, salad, bread and dessert will be provided. There will be a cash bar.
Awards this year are ceramic mugs created by local artist Lisa Wood. Another local artist and skier, Tara Schmidt, has designed this year’s race shirt, available for $25.
Race directors for 2024 are Megan Corazza and Deland Anderson. Anderson said KNSC is expecting about 100 participants, with about a third of the racers from the community of Homer and others joining from communities on the Kenai Peninsula. The race event was originally started in the late 1980s.
