‘Homer’s STILL Got Snow’ ski race wraps up season on Lookout Mountain

Last weekend’s race was a fundraiser for recent state champs, HHS Nordic Ski Team.

Community skiers gathered at the Lookout Mountain XC Ski Trails on Saturday, March 15, for a final hurrah before the anticipated end of the local ski season.

The event was a fundraiser for the Homer High School Mariners ski team and a substitute community race for the Homer Marathon, which was canceled due to a lack of snow on the connector trail, said Jessie Goodrich, co-director and Homer High School Nordic ski coach.

Sixty-two skiers ranging in age from 2 to 77 joined in the fun. Skiers competed in 3-kilometer, 10-kilometer, 20-kilometer, 30-kilometer and 40-kilometer races, with the option for skiers to ski a little more or a little less, depending.

Goodrich and co-director Emily Lints wanted to thank the grooming team on Lookout Mountain, who maintain the trails for users throughout the winter season. They acknowledged John, Mike, Bill, Tad and Ben for their hard work.

They also acknowledged the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club for their support in creating the event, and the community for participating, including the “several community members who donated extra money to the ski team.”

“We have so many people in the community that never fail to show their support,” wrote Goodrich in an email on Monday.

The event was followed by the ski club’s end-of-season party and spaghetti feed fundraiser, which was hosted at the Homer Sea Plane Base.
