The Homer Boys’ U14 soccer team played the Kenai U15 Girls at Kenai on June 11. The final score was 2-2. Homer had four breakaways in the first half and their passing game kept them in control of the contest.
In the second half, the game ramped up with outstanding passing across and down the field. A total of 16 shots by the Vortex were stopped by the Kenai goal tender. Four shots came close to scoring, but hit the posts. With continuous pressure by the entire team, two goals were eventually scored, both by Oliver Beck. Charles Menke and Dexter Lowe played strong defense, and Simon Dye set up multiple plays for his teammates. Goal tender Cole Roberts had eight saves at the Vortex net.
The new U12 Coed Homer Hawks also played their first game of the season against the Kenai U12 girls. The Hawks held Kenai to 2-0 through the first half. In the end, the score was 6-1 with Rhodes Turner beating 2 Kenai defense players, to score for Homer.
This was an amazing game as many of the Homer kids have never before played on a full, lined soccer field. By every report, they loved the experience and look forward to more.
The Vortex, the Hawks and the Homer U16 girls are scheduled to play in Kenai again at 6 p.m. June 25.
