Gene Jones continues to be the frontrunner in the Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby’s big fish competition that offers a $10,000 prize. Jones hooked his 236.2-pound halibut July 25 while fishing with Capt. David Bayes of Central Charters aboard the Grand Aleutian.
Reeling in a tagged halibut offers even bigger prizes. With more than 100 tagged earlier this year, only one was caught in May, 15 in June, 10 in July and three in August. The value of those tags won’t be announced until the derby ends, but could be worth as much as $50,000 or a new pickup truck, or as little as $250.
Homer has a two halibut limit per day, per person.
