Homer hosts swim invitational

Colony placed first in combined team scores

Homer High School hosted the Homer Invite swim meet with teams visiting from Palmer, Colony, Kenai and Seward high schools. For combined team scores, Colony placed first followed by Kenai and Palmer. Homer placed fourth and Seward followed in fifth place.

Mariner pool manager and swim coach Kane Graham said overall the athletes performed very well. “This was a good early season showing for Homer, the kids performances look really good out there,” he said.

Graham has been pool manager at the high school for six months and this is his first year coaching. But, he’s not new to the pool. He swam for the Mariner team and was a member of the Kachemak Swim Club growing up in Homer. He said he’s glad to be in his new role as pool manager and “being able to provide some experience to help these kids perform the best that they can,” he said.

Seniors Katie Hallam and Cassidy Carroll, team captains, both said they thought the meet went well for one of the first meets of the season. Carroll said the swim team is relatively small this year so this was the first time they’ve been able to compete in the relays, noting specifically their second-place finish in the 200-yard relay. Hallam said there are several students on the team this year who are either new to swimming altogether or they haven’t swum in a couple of years. Both Carroll and Hallam have been swimming for several years.

The next meet for the team will take place in Kenai on Sept. 21, the same day as Mariner football homecoming. The swimmers will be able to return home to attend the events for homecoming.
