The host Mariners swept the Kenai boys and girls basketball teams Tuesday night in the Alice Witte Gymnasium.
The Lady Mariners topped the Kardinal girls 30-25, moving up to 4-3 for the season. The Kenai girls dropped to 3-5. The Homer boys outscored Kenai 63-53 in a tight game, moving to 6-1 overall. The Kenai boys took their second loss of the season and are now 6-2 overall.
In the girls game, Homer led 12-8 after the first half. The Mariners kept that lead at 22-12 by the end of the third quarter, and the Kardinals ended with a three-pointer at the final buzzer to bring the score to 30-25.
For Homer, Sailey Rhodes led with 14 points, followed by Hannah Hatfield with five and Laura Inama with four. The Kenai girls were led by freshman Emma Beck with 11 and Logan Satathite, who had eight points.
The Homer boys came out strong in the first quarter of their game, racking up an early 10-3 lead. The Kardinals quickly closed that gap, though, and the two teams traded the lead for much of the second and third quarters. Kenai was up 26-24 at the half, but Homer eked out a small lead by the end of the third quarter. That momentum grew in the final quarter, and the Mariners pulled away to control the game until its 63-53 finish.
The Kvasnikoff brothers, Jordan, a senior, and Jakob, a sophomore, each netted three three-pointers for the Kardinals. They also both led the team with 19 points each. Maison Dunham had seven points for the Kards.
For Homer, Carter Tennison led the way with 23 points, helped by Clayton Beachy and Eyoab Knapp, who had 11 points each. Josiah Raymond and Parker Lowney each netted a three-pointer.
