Homer baseball tops Petersburg, Ketchikan at round robin

The Mariners are now 3-1 overall and finished 3-1 at the tournament.

The Homer baseball team finished up play at the Ketchikan Round Robin on Saturday by defeating Petersburg 11-3 and Ketchikan 3-2.

The Mariners are now 3-1 overall and finished 3-1 at the tournament.

Against Petersburg, a seven-run second inning was enough to give Homer all the advantage it would need in the game.

Weston Marley pitched the first six innings and gave up two runs — one earned — on three hits while walking three and striking out two. Jayden Sims finished with a scoreless inning.

Marley helped himself at the plate by going 1 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. CJ Burns had a hit, run and two RBIs, while Preston Stanislaw had a hit, run and three RBIs. Willem Hakala also scored two runs for the Mariners.

Against Ketchikan, the Kings took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning. Homer pushed across two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth to take the victory.

Stanislaw went 2 1-3 innings on the bump, giving up two runs — one earned — on no hits while walking six and striking out two. Clyde Clemens finished with 4 2-3 scoreless innings, giving up two hits while walking four and striking out nine.

At the plate, Burns, Henry Wedvik and Clemens had the hits, Burns, Wedvik and Austin Briscoe had the runs, and Clemens had an RBI.

Friday

The Homer baseball team defeated Petersburg 11-3 on Friday at the Ketchikan Round Robin.

The Mariners are now 1-1 at the tournament and 1-1 on the season.

Against the Vikings, Homer had a 9-0 lead after four innings.

Henry Wedvik went all seven innings for the Mariners on the mound, giving up three runs — two earned — on six hits while walking none and striking out 11.

Wedvik helped himself at the plate by going 2 for 4 with two runs.

Also at the plate for Homer, CJ Burns was 2 for 4 with three runs, Clyde Clemens had two runs and Preston Stanislaw had two RBIs.

Thursday

The Homer baseball team opened its season Thursday with an 11-10 loss to Ketchikan in the Ketchikan Round Robin.

The Mariners led 3-1 until the Kings grabbed a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Mariners tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth, then took a 10-6 lead with four more runs in the top of the seventh.

The Kings rallied with five runs in the bottom of the inning to win.

Both sides banged out 11 hits. Clyde Clemens was 4 for 5 for Homer with three runs and an RBI, while Preston Stanislaw was 3 for 4 with a run and and two RBIs. Also, Weston Marley scored three runs, and Henry Wedvik and Jayden Simms had two RBIs.

Homer used six pitchers in the game. Clemens gave up a run in two innings, Stanislaw pitched two scoreless innings, Marley gave up five runs — one earned — in a inning, Wedvik pitched a scoreless inning, Simms gave up four runs in a third of an inning, and Austin Briscoe gave up a run without getting an out.
