Swimming
Homer was recently represented by 30 young swimmers from Kachemak Swim Club in this year’s Alaska Age Group Championships, held Feb. 15-17 at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.
The Kachemak Swim Club boys and girls took a combined eighth place at the event. More than 400 swimmers from across the state competed in the event, according to a press release from the swim club.
Competition is organized according to gender and then by age group, from a 10 and under category up through age 14.
“Many hours of practice, hard work and focus resulted in some really rewarding times and personal bests,” said Head Coach Thaddeus Gunther in the press release.
The swimmers earned a combined 157 points and 66 relay points, for a total of 223 points. The only swim clubs that scored higher were from Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks and Kodiak.
Middle School sports
The following is a re-cap of how youth skiers did last weekend at the Seward Middle School Invitational Nordic Ski Race by Mike Gracz, Homer Middle School ski coach:
The Homer Middle School Husky ski team took away the most cookies last Friday at the Seward Middle School Invitational Nordic Ski Race at Trail River Campground near Moose Pass. Seventy-five skiers from Homer, Soldotna, Kenai, and Seward raced on a sunny day over a flat 3.5-kilometer course.
The top ten skiers in the girls’ and boys’ races each received their prize medals in the form of large cookies. Homer Husky skiers got to eat nine of the twenty cookies overall.
In the Girls Race, seven of the top-ten places were again filled by glitter-faced Huskies. Hannah Stonorov moved up to second, while Eryn Field, Alana Houlihan, and Frida Renner took fourth, fifth, and sixth places. Sylvia Clemens, Elsa Otis, and Lawson Alexson-Walls rounded out the podium in eighth, ninth, and tenth.
Kenai skiers took first, third, and seventh. Kenai phenom Jayna Boonstra again finished with a time faster than all but the top two boys over the same race course. Emily Moss placed third and Madison McDonald was seventh.
In the Boys Race, two of the three competing Husky skiers were in the top ten. Garret Briscoe moved up to third and Seamus McDonough quickly recovered from a stumble near the finish to capture the cookie for ninth place. Hudson Loboy finished 23rd of 46 competitors in his first ever school race.
