Homer Hockey Association’s Coed Adult Hockey League got off to a energetic start Saturday night as four teams and more than 50 skaters fought for their first win.
The first two teams to match up were White Lightning and the Dark Destroyers. This game was off to a fast start with Lightening’s Dylan Braund setting the pace with a breakaway goal in the first period. The Dark Destroyers were quick to respond with a top-shelf goal by Steve Nevak on goalie Shawn Hatton. The score remained tied until Chip Duggan found the back of the net for the Lightening with a minute left in the first period.
The second period started with back-to-back goals from Destroyer’s Kristen Brown and Lightening’s Tim Bristol. The second Period ended with White Lightening ahead 3-2. Third period teams were slow to score, as goalies Charlie Stewart and Shawn Hatton stopped all shots on goal. With minutes left in the game, Chris Brown found himself on a breakaway that ended with a goal to tie up the game. Final score was 3-3. MVP for the game was Braund.
The second game of the night matched up the Red Rockets with the Blue Blockers.
This was a spectator’s game, as scoring was fast in furious.
The game started with a quick goal by Travis Brown, assisted by Sue Rennolds for the Rockets. The lead didn’t last long when Matt Stineff found the five-hole and scored for the Blockers. First period ended with a tie score of 1-1. Second period ramped up the scoring with Andrew Snella finding the net on a breakaway and Steve Rich scoring with an assist from Vick Lowe. With a sense of urgency, Vaughn Duggar took matters in his own hands to catch the goalie Charile Stewart off guard and score for the Blockers late in the second period to end the period 3-2 for the Rockets.
The Rockets kept their lead for the third period, with Lowe and Charlie Johnson scoring in the first few shifts. The Blocker’s got an opportunity for a power play after Russ Walker got called for hooking. They used it to full advantage with Blocker’s Chris Russ adding one to the scoreboard. Another minor penalty was given to the Rockets for too many players on the ice, allowing Dean Kildaw to add another Blocker goal late in the third period, but it wasn’t enough to win the game. Final score 5-4 Rockets. MVP for the game was Lowe.
