Homer’s community recreation adult basketball league or “city league” will hold their championship playoff games at the Homer High School gym on Feb. 3 and 4.
There are approximately 90 community members who have been participating in the Sunday afternoon games since October. The league has been active in the community for approximately 40 years. This year there are six active teams and each is sponsored by a local business or organization including, Arches Alaska, the Alaska Bible Institute (ABI), Alaska Physical Therapy and Wellness, the Alaska Salt Co., Bay Welding and Ulmer’s Drug and Hardware.
According to Mike Illg, City of Homer recreation manager, Linda and Dave Etzwiler are at the heart of the program by keeping team scores and statistics, running the score clock, setting up and cleaning up the gym each week and making sure all the players have completed their forms and paid fees. Their son, Mike Etzwiler, organizes referees for the games through the Cook Inlet Referee Association.
There were 45 regular season games and the season will conclude with nine play off games on Saturday Feb. 3. The first two games in the tournament are Bay Weld and ABI at 11 a.m. and Ulmer’s and the Alaska Salt Co. at 12:15 p.m. The championship game will take place at 6 p.m. on Sunday and the winning team members will receive a championship hoodie.
