2nd annual Great Salmon Run draws participants statewide

Sponsored by Thrive Ninilchik, the 5K race was held during Salmonfest weekend

Nearly 70 competitors crossed the finish line at the second annual Great Salmon Run 5K Run, Walk or Dance held at the Kenai Peninsula Fairgrounds in Ninilchik on Saturday, Aug. 3.

Participants came from all over the Kenai Peninsula, to Anchorage, Eagle River and Fairbanks, and even the Lower 48.

Justin Trail, from Ninilchik, took first place in the men’s category, with Caleb Petersen from Fairbanks in second and Homer’s Ryan Taylor in third.

Katie Bast from Fairbanks came in first for the women’s category, followed by Adelyn McCorison from Ninilchik in second and Grace Angivran Moore-Anderson from Fairbanks in third.

The event, which runs concurrently with Salmonfest, is sponsored by local nonprofit Thrive Ninilchik. The Great Salmon Run was created as a “healthy, fun community event to help raise funds for Thrive Ninilchik so we can continue funding opportunities that enrich the lives of our local youth,” the organization’s website states.
