1st annual Great Salmon Run 5K starts strong

Net proceeds from the event support Ninilchik youth

A cool, quiet morning met runners participating in the inaugural Great Salmon Run 5K race on Saturday, Aug. 5. The race, organized and sponsored by recently founded nonprofit Thrive Ninilchik, coincided with this year’s Salmonfest music festival at the Kenai Peninsula Fairgrounds.

With this event, Thrive Ninilchik generated $8,000 in net proceeds that will go toward “developing lifelong learning skills and development for our Ninilchik youth,” according to an Aug. 7 Facebook post.

Mary Szatkowski finished first overall and in the women’s category at 19 minutes and 35 seconds. Adelyn McCorison placed second in the women’s category at 22:24 and Kristen Buckwalter placed third at 22:38.

Soldotna’s Justin Trail placed first in the men’s category with 20 minutes and 21 seconds. Homer’s Tate Ostrom placed second at 20:53 and Anchorage’s Riley Prestegard placed third at 21:45.
