A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, at the Christian Community Church on Bartlett Street in Homer. Pastors Floyd Seekins and Vince Porte will officiate. Flowers are welcome at the service. Memorial donations are to be made to Homer Hospice in memory of dear Mary.
Born in Wollotchet, Wash., on Nov. 11, 1930, Mary was one of nine children. After her father died in 1946, Mary dropped out of school to help her mother support the family. From a young age, Mary was caretaker to her younger brother Harley who was born developmentally disabled. She nurtured this relationship until her health no longer allowed her to do so.
Mary married Jerry Scholes in 1959 and mothered two girls, Linda and Abby. In conjunction with their Coastal Refrigeration business, Mary also managed a Good Humor Ice Cream business for six summers. She had 13 small Subaru trucks and hired 11 teenagers who all adored “Mom Mary.” They supplied cool treats to neighborhoods from Tacoma to Everett, Wash., selling over 100 dozen bars a day.
After the girls “left the nest,” Mary and Jerry moved to Alaska in 1979 with their Coastal Refrigeration business. Mary faithfully attended her husband, Grace Bible Church and the annual Lutefisk dinner at the Lutheran Church. Mary refrained from lying and cursing, choosing to be patient and content.
“She preferred to listen rather than talk, to read rather than watch, and above all to love anyone in need,” her family said. “Her twinkling eyes, warm laugh, and feather-light touch will be missed here on earth.”
Mary is survived by her life dance partner and beloved husband of 53 years, Jerry Scholes; her cherished daughters, Linda and Abby, and four treasured grandchildren, as well as her special brother Harley and sisters Elinor and Rosie.
