Karen S. Flyum

Longtime Homer resident Mrs. Karen Sue Flyum, 68, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at her home in Homer. Memorial services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at the Homer Elks Lodge, 215 W. Jenny Lane in Homer. 

Mrs. Flyum was born Sept. 18, 1944, in Tacoma, Wash. She graduated from high school and continued her education by attending beauty school. She has lived in various places around Alaska, including Cordova, Valdez, Petersburg and Anchorage. Karen was self-employed and was an Emblem Club state president. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and enjoyed beading in her free time. 

The family wrote, “Karen was very generous, funny, very sharing, very helpful, always pitching in and was very good at helping out with fundraisers. Karen was a very good cook and loved a good party.” 

She was preceded in death by her father, Link; mother, Betty; brother, Dale; daughter, Alexe; and infant son, Kurt.

She is survived by her husband, Alex “Willie” Flyum of Homer; daughters, Rama and Charlene Flyum, both of Homer; sons, Darry and Torlend Flyum, both of Homer; stepfather, Don Nelson; brothers, Mike Tennison, Clyde Tennison, John Nelson and Ty Tennison; sisters, Carol Druyvestein and Tina Tennison; 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
