George Nathan, retired pilot and an integral member of the Seldovia community, passed away peacefully on April 7th, 2023 at the age of 77.
Born in 1945 to a father in the military, moving around the world was inevitable, and this life demanded resilience, and self-reliance; George fostered both. George began his adult life in the Navy, serving as a signalman aboard the USS Severn, an oiler. After being discharged he continued serving his country as one of the first in the US Air Marshal program keeping the skies safe from the threat of terrorism and hijacking. He then moved into the Customs Service and fought in the war on drugs in Florida and Arizona. When that career came to an end he turned to the skies as a professional pilot. He spent over 30 years as an aviator, navigating the skies above Tucson, Arizona, and then later, the rugged Alaskan terrain with talent and pure joy. He loved flying. He’d spend all day moving passengers and freight, then go home to practice or play on the simulator he built in his living room. His dedication to his craft was unparalleled, and he earned a reputation as one of the most trusted and respected pilots in the state.
George was not just a skilled aviator, but also a man with a generous heart. He offered what he had to anyone who needed it, be it a place to stay, some fish or deer meat for the freezer, or a hand in shoveling snow. His generosity touched the lives of many, both in the air and on the ground.
Despite his many accomplishments, and decades of experience, George remained humble and grounded, never seeking the spotlight or the accolades that often come with his profession. He was content to live a simple life, hunkered down in Seldovia, flying planes, and then his simulator, after retirement. He served on the City Council so he could help his town in practical ways.
George Nathan’s passing leaves a void in the Seldovia community and in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered as a skilled pilot, a generous person, and a beloved member of the community.
George is survived by his son Chris Nathan, his daughter Sara Callor, and his grandchildren Britta, Emily, and Nate.
A memorial service will be held in Seldovia in late June. Details will be forthcoming on the website Ever Loved.
