Floyd Everett Seekins passed away Christmas morning with his daughter at his side at his winter home in California at the age of 89.
Born in Amery, Wisconsin, to Everett and Lorna Seekins on March 27, 1935, he was the brother born between four sisters Elaine, CoraBelle, Carol and Sandra. All of whom preceded him in death.
Floyd graduated from Amery high school in 1953. He was a member of the Future Farmers of America and an athlete in track, basketball, and football.
He drove his Harley 74 to date his high school cheerleader sweetheart Gert whom he married May 26, 1953. Together, they were “the Unstoppables.” She preceded him in death shortly after their 70th anniversary.
Floyd was a dairy farmer before being called to the ministry in 1956. After graduating from St. Paul Bible College in 1961, he moved his family to northern Minnesota where he pastored two churches.
In June 1969, Homer, Alaska became his home. He pastored churches in Homer and Kasilof and ministered to anyone in need of a pastor. He faithfully shared the good news that salvation is by grace through faith, not works, even religious works, commonly referencing Eph. 2:8-9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith…” He called himself “The Man of Faith” as he shared that truth in a series of newspaper articles in the Homer News in the ‘70s.
He loved music and taught himself the guitar and violin and was still playing in church services before his stroke.
While ministry was his lifelong focus, he supplemented his income with logging, school bus driving, and Seekins B&B -Homer’s first in the 70’s- where he applied his skills as builder and repairman as well as blueberry pancake chef for guests from around the world.
With their various homes on wheels, he and Gert toured Alaska, Canada and every continental state. He flew his Cessna many places to minister, visit family and friends, as well as hunt and fish. He harvested his last bull moose at age 85.
He was proud to call Homer his home and supported many organizations, ministries, and those in need. He and Gert followed Homer sport teams to support their kids, grandkids, and others.
He prayed regularly for his four children: Jeff (Barb), Kim (Kelly), Dale (Diana) and Jane “Chett”; 14 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, his nieces, nephews and many others.
He will be missed by all who knew him for his wisdom, humor, prayers, music and friendship.
A memorial service will be held at Glacierview Baptist Church, Homer, AK January 26th at 2 PM.
