Dorothy L. Barnes, 91, died peacefully in Homer on Aug. 19, 2016.

She received a Certificate of Practical Nursing in 1966 and then moved to Alaska and began her nursing career. She met and married Bruce Barnes, a crane-operator for the Alaska Railroad. She graduated from the University of Alaska with a degree in social science, and a bachelor of arts in psychology. They retired and moved to Homer together in 1980.

Dorothy was an accomplished quilter for more than 50 years. Her other passions included fishing for king salmon off of Anchor Point. She was very proud of her perennial gardens and looked forward to visits from her friends and family.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Bruce; her sisters Elsie Jeral of Minnesota and Cordelia (Ed) Raymond; her brother; Robert Sahlberg of North Dakota; children, Larry (Suzanne) Cameron, Cathy (Doyle) Gabriel, Sharon (Jack) Cook and Steven Wollard; grandchildren, Pauline Overly, Anita Rentzel, Matthew Hallgren, Terry Overly, Tonya Jackson, Baily Mason, Travis Cook, Randy Gabriel; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William Boelz and Bertha Sydow; her siblings, Virginia Torkildson and Evelyn Holm, Rose Mahedy; her children, Phyllis Hallgren and Randy Cameron; grandchild, Robin Palmer, and great-grandchild, Jack Smith.

A graveside service was held on Aug. 22, 2016, at Anchor Point Cemetery. The family would like to thank the Homer Senior Citizens Center’s assisted living staff for their excellent care over the past three months.
