Beulah Jane “BJ” Johnson

Former Homer resident Beulah Jane “BJ” (Falter) Johnson, 80, died Oct. 22, 2013, at Ray Hickey Hospice in Vancouver, Wash.

She was born Dec. 8, 1932, in Fordville, N.D., to Percy Kenneth Falter and Irene Elizabeth Walsh. She was the oldest of four children.

“She took life by the horns, and was fearless, unstoppable and ready to take anyone on an adventure with her. Beulah could do it all: crabbing, shrimping, hunting, bartending, camping, cooking — you name it. She loved being around those she loved and teaching them anything they wanted to learn. She died without a single gray hair on her head — not one,” her family said.

For almost 20 years Johnson lived in Woodland, Wash., at Horseshoe Lake Park where she made her home. She also lived in Homer during the late 1970s and early 1980s and worked as a bartender at the Bayside, Waterfront and the Sterling (now Kharacters) bars. She also came during the summer to fish and dig for razor clams, and has many friends and family in Homer.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Raymond Baird; her second husband, Clifford Allen Huddelston; and her third husband, Laurie Eldon Johnson.

She is survived by her three brothers, Dallas and wife Nancy of Longview, Wash.; Forrest and wife Joanie of Kelso, Wash.; Ron and wife Po of Goldendale, Wash.; by her six children; Virginia Baird of Kalama, Wash.; Richard Baird and wife Sharmon of Everett, Wash; Chrystal Baird of Auburn, Wash.; Christiann Smallwood and husband Mike of Marshall, Ill.; David Baird and wife Carla of Homer; and JoAnn Johnson and husband Gary of Auburn, Wash. She is also survived by her 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren (with one on the way) and one great-great grandchild, Rowyn.

The family would like to thank the following for their care and support over the past two years: Woodland Moose; Woodland and Kalama VFW; Kim and David Woolford of Woodland, Wash.; Bill Maitland of Woodland, Wash.; Dee Ladahl and sons Dan, Lon, Jack and Ted; Gary and Sandy Day, and the Lynda Vista Crew in Arizona; Laverne Fredrickson of Woodland Wash.; Bonnie and Larry Cochran of Woodland Wash.; Ray Hickey Hospice of Vancouver, Wash.; and everyone who donated time and energy to helping our mom get over the hurdles. Thank you.
