Divers recovered the bodies of three people killed when their plane crashed during takeoff and sank in China Poot Lake across Kachemak Bay from Homer. The cause of the Halibut Cove Air Cessna’s crash was still under investigation. Local pilots speculated that severe wind conditions on the lake could have contributed to the crash.

The Homer News began a three-part series on the collapse of Peninsula Savings and Loan. A year after its closing, reporters wrote that bad loans were the foundation of its fall based on interviews and court records. About 500 investors in Homer, Kenai and Soldotna had bought approximately $1.5 million worth of stock from 1977 to 1979 to get the bank started.

Following sailboat races held in Kachemak Bay, the Homer News reported that plans were “afoot” among inspired residents to start a local sailing club. Sailboats from Anchorage had come down to Homer for the Regatta Day races. Their owners were reportedly impressed with the water and sailing conditions in Kachemal Bay.
