A mural on the main lobby wall of West Homer Elementary School is intended to reflect the school’s vision and mission statements. Principal Eric Waltenbaugh said the art also is intended to be welcoming and show the student community.
“I think we’ve got it,” he said last Thursday as he provided a tour of the new mural.
Designed and painted under the direction of artist Tracy Hansen, the mural features silhouettes of students in various poses, a technique used by artist Tom Reed on the Pioneer Avenue mural by NOMAR. It shows trees, fireweed, mountains, the ocean and, arching overhead, stars. One set of images shows students pointing toward the sky and stars, illustrating the vision that says the school “inspires and supports all students to be lifelong learners with the courage and confidence to make positive contributions to the world.”
Hansen has been working with other parents and with students from each grade. She said she has been impressed by their work.
“They’re all amazing artists,” she said.
The mural should be finished in time for West Homer Elementary’s First Friday art show 5-7 p.m. May 5, when the public is welcome to see the painting as well as student art.
