I disagree with last week’s letter writer. Homer water and sewer rates are not unfair and do not discriminate against Kachemak City.
The writer is here for five months of the year. The City of Homer has to provide the service 24/7 and 365 days a year. Whether or not you put anything into the system, you need to help pay for the system to be in place 24/7 and 365 days a year.
The city cannot travel or take the winter off. Check out your HEA bill. You pay a base rate every month whether you use it or not. That is because, like the City of Homer, HEA has to provide the service 24/7, 365 day a year, whether we use it or not.
Water and sewer is expensive in a small community. Treating surface water so it is safe to drink is expensive. Keeping up with new EPA regulations is expensive. The City of Homer residents pay for many services enjoyed by Kachemak City and the surrounding areas such as the library and other city services.
