A Juneau man who went missing while hiking on Saturday, Oct. 30, was found dead on Monday morning, said a police spokesperson.
Douglas Shockley, 63, went out hiking near the Dredge Lake area on Saturday afternoon, according to Lt. Krag Campbell.
When Shockley didn’t return and his car was found by the trailhead after remaining there overnight, the family contacted emergency services. Personnel from the Juneau Police Department, Alaska State Troopers, Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search, and Juneau Mountain Rescue responded, searching in the Dredge Lake Trail area on Sunday.
He was found dead approximately a quarter mile from the trail on Monday morning, Campbell said. The preliminary investigation showed no signs of trauma to Shockley, Campbell said, but the body will be sent to the Alaska State Medical Examiner’s Office in Anchorage for an autopsy.
The area he was found in was a common area for him to hike, Campbell said. The case is still under investigation.
