Little Fireweed donates to food pantry

Homer’s Little Fireweed Academy students on Friday, Dec. 20, delivered three wagons of donations to the Homer Food Pantry, including dry goods, canned goods and paper towels.

Food Pantry coordinator Deb Schmitz, a retired kindergarten and first grade teacher from Little Fireweed, introduced the organization to the students and thanked them for their donation. Schmitz told the students the pantry provides food to approximately 170 families each week and asked them to guess how many cans that is. Many students raised their hands guessed various numbers ranging from 50 to 500. Schmitz responded that the actual total is about 1,000 when they are open on Monday and Thursday each week.

The students got a brief tour of the facility, including a glance into the kitchen. Schmitz told students that last week they provided about 30 fettuccine dinners, 20 shrimp dinners and pizza. She explained the role of the out buildings as housing facilities for the dry goods and then helped the youth unload their packages into the donation box outside of the downstairs door at the Homer Methodist Church.
