A Kenai man was killed Tuesday after his vehicle overturned on the Sterling Highway south of Kasilof, the Alaska State Troopers reported Wednesday.

Eugene Darby, 82, was traveling north on the Sterling Highway on Tuesday evening at about 6:50 p.m. when his Ford F250 lost traction and slid across the highway and into the southbound ditch, where it overturned, according to a dispatch from the troopers. Darby was entering the “S” curve of the highway at Milepost 115, near Cohoe Loop Road, when the vehicle lost traction, the dispatch said.

Darby was taken to Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, where he was pronounced dead, according to the dispatch. No alcohol or drugs are suspected.

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities recommends that motorists check weather conditions prior to traveling during the winter. Additionally, the department recommends reducing driving speeds, driving with headlights on and allowing for extra stopping space during the winter.
