I find it disappointing, to say the least, that a recall effort has begun against Homer City Council members Catriona Reynolds, Donna Aderhold and David Lewis. They have done nothing to merit such action or disrespect. Some may have disagreed with the aim of the inclusion resolution or the resolution concerning the pipeline, but bringing to the table matters constituents have urged the council to consider is precisely what representative government requires.
The so-called violations of their duties of office alleged in the recall application are supported by justifications so weak that they’d be laughable were it not for the fact that under Alaska law they might actually compel a vote.
In that case, I’d urge my fellow Homerites to stand up in support of the three brave council members and vote “no.” If we can’t officially assert that ours is an inclusive community, we can at least rise as one to defend free speech. That is, after all, what this is really all about.
