A flood advisory was released on Tuesday, Dec. 10 by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities for the Anchor River near Anchor Point. An ice jam caused “minor flooding” over roads including the Old Sterling Highway and Anchor Point Road.
Anchor Point Road, which runs parallel to the Anchor River through the Anchor River State Recreation Area, was “overtopped” with floodwater due to the ice jam. Campgrounds within the recreation area were also flooded.
Toward Homer, there was also a large buildup of ice on the Anchor River near the Sterling Highway at Black Water Bend. That section of the highway did not experience flooding during the duration of the advisory.
The advisory also warned of “rapid river rise possible upstream.” Alaska DOT&PF cautioned community members to avoid the affected areas as much as possible, or to drive with caution.
A similar advisory was also posted on the U.S. National Weather Service Anchorage Alaska Facebook page.
