Homer High School student council discussed final preparation plans for a week of homecoming events at their student council meeting last Thursday. The students in council represent all four grades at the high school. In order to account for all of the events scheduled, they are organized into committees for each section: homecoming dance, bonfire, royalty elections and the pep rally. For the homecoming football games the Homer Mariners will play the Barrow Whalers on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 2 and 4 p.m.
Before breaking out into committees, student council president Sofia Loboy, emphasized to the rest of council that “we need to start the year out right and really try to promote school spirit and that involves dressing up for spirit week.” The council decided at the meeting that whichever class has the least amount of participation in spirit week will be responsible for cleaning up after the homecoming dance.
Spirit week runs Monday through Friday this week and each day was assigned a different costume theme. Monday was America Day, Tuesday was inside out day, Wednesday was dress like your Dad, Thursday is dress like a senior citizen and Friday is twin day.
Homecoming royalty voted on by each class will include a king and queen from the senior class, prince and princess from the junior class, duke and duchess from the sophomore class and lord and lady from the freshman class.
The pep rally will take place on game day and the cheerleaders are volunteering to provide face paint that students can wear to the game, council member Raquel Goldman said. The Mariner students will have their own section for seating arranged for the game.
Following the game, there will be a parade with a float from each class and a bonfire that will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The homecoming dance will start at 8 p.m. and end at 11 p.m. Christopher Kincaid will be at the dance for photography.
If anyone in the community has relatively clean wood pallets that they want to donate to the school bonfire, those can be dropped off in the lower parking lot of Homer High School where the pile is already started and if you have questions you can contact the office at 907-235-4600.
