Community members turned out under the sun to enjoy an open-air street fair on Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The second annual Homer Summer Solstice Fair, located on Hazel Avenue between Safeway and the Homer Public Library, had more than 40 vendors, live music and games for kids and adults alike to enjoy.
Organizer Sage Anderson said this year’s event doubled in size from the previous year. On the fair’s Facebook page, approximately 1,500 people responded to the event, with more than 100 individuals affirming that they would attend.
“I think the sunshine and the warm weather we’ve been having might have had something to do with it,” she said.
A variety of vendors, from food stalls to craft booths and more, lined both sides of Hazel Avenue. A stage pavilion parked on the grass alongside the road provided space for a daylong lineup of musicians, while magician Jungle Josh performed sleight-of-hand tricks for the crowd in the midst of the vendor booths.
Fairgoers also had the opportunity to participate in several planned competitions, including the Kid Olympics, a Jell-O eating contest, a 3D art competition and a dance-until-you-drop competition.
More than $100 in prizes were awarded to the winners of the various games, Anderson said.
The entry fee was waived for the Kid Olympics, which was sponsored by Duncan House, and the dance competition, which was sponsored by the Homer Bay Club.
“It’s a day full of fun,” Anderson said.
