Searching for a fishing spot can now be done virtually with a new interactive sportfishing guide launched earlier this month by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

The application, called “gofishak,” allows users to filter fishing locations by category, species and access, as well as to filter access sites by trails, boat launches and harbors. Map icons show the locations of sportfishing opportunities, harbors, launch ramps, trails, state park boundaries and sport fish management areas, relative to communities.

Users can also click on icons to learn more about the site, such as what they can fish for, fish run times and site amenities. For example, at the Big Eddy Day Use Area in Soldotna, people can fish for king, sockeye, chum, coho and pink salmon as well as rainbow trout, steelhead, Arctic char and Dolly Varden, among others.

The application can be accessed on the ADFG website at adfg.alaska.gov.
