The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities provided updates to the public on the Homer Airport Improvement Project at a meeting Friday in Homer City Hall.
Remaining construction will begin April 7 and be conducted approximately six days a week, with nightly closures occurring from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. All navaids are currently online, but will be turned off at the start of construction and will remain off until construction is complete.
Kyle Green, QAP project superintendent, said during the meeting that there is “pretty minimal work” left in the project, including finishing work on Taxiway G, some runway safety areas and ditch work.
Construction for Taxiway G includes paving and electrical work, and some construction work finishing slopes, Green said.
“We’re hoping to be wrapped up with paving in May sometime,” he said.
The timeline presented at the meeting said that construction may continue until July 1. However, Green said he “didn’t anticipate it going near that long.”
“We’re looking at getting out of here early to mid-June,” he said. “Hopefully we get out of the way so you guys can have full access to the runway as quick as possible.”
DOT Project Engineer Jason Baxley, also present at the meeting, thanked the community for working with the project team while the airport improvements have been ongoing.
“I know we should have been done last year. A few things kind of came out and pushed everything into this year,” he said. “So I appreciate the community recognizing there’s some issues we’re working through. We’re going to be done.”
