The Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve received further recognition of their 25 years from the Homer City Council during their last regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 12.

Resolution 24-082 follows a similar commending resolution passed by the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly on Aug. 6.

Homer’s resolution commends KBNERR’s 25 years of studying the Kachemak Bay ecosystem and educating area residents and visitors about the importance of Homer’s natural environment.

“KBNERR’s goals are research, monitoring, education, training, providing a natural field laboratory and living classroom for improving the scientific understanding and management of natural resources in and around Kachemak Bay,” the resolution reads. “The City of Homer has received numerous benefits from KBNERR’s research and coastal training program activities.”

Reserve manager Katherine Schake thanked the council for their recognition during the meeting.

“Thank you to the city council and the mayor for recognizing our 25th anniversary at the Research Reserve, and thank you to all of the community members who have volunteered with us for the last 25 years, served on our community council (and) make sure that our research and education is place-based and important and applied to the communities of Kachemak Bay,” she said. “We look forward to the next 25 years of enhancing appreciation and understanding of our coastal ecosystem to make sure it remains productive and healthy.”
