In other action Monday night, the Homer City Council also discussed spending $31,000 for a 6-page section about Homer in the next edition of “North to the Future,” a book published by Wyndham Publications, Kirkland, Wash., that includes information on Alaska’s history, state agencies, economy and businesses. 

Former Homer Rep. Gail Phillips is listed as the author of the fourth-edition. Wrede said the book goes out to every member of the U.S. Congress. It is available as a free download at uaf.edu/files/alumni/ALASKA-IV.pfd.

 The city would buy the section of the book as a community profile and write its own content, Wrede said. Wythe said she thought aspects of the book sounded “flim-flammy,” but also thought it would be a good way to promote Homer.

“Homer is open for business,” Wythe said. “I feel like this can pass the message.”

In other action, the council:

• Approved appointing Peter Roedl to the Parks and Recreation Commission and reappointing Michele Miller to the Public Arts Committee;

• Introduced an ordinance creating an account to accept donations for the Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture Needs Assessment;

• Approved a resolution supporting the Homer Hockey Association’s efforts to secure funding to purchase the Kevin Bell Ice Arena;

• Awarded a contract of $11,881 to Liberty Electric of Homer for a micro-strainer electrical connection at the waste water treatment plant; and

• Approved a resolution expressing support for Homer Electric Association’s request for funding to replace emergency generators in Seldovia.
