In a speech just delivered President Obama asserted: “They (congressional Republicans) will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the American economy. … The full faith and credit of the United States of America is not a bargaining chip.” He continued: “America cannot afford another debate with this Congress about whether or not they should pay the bills they’ve already racked up.”
It’s hard to get the head around what’s being attempted to be perpetrated here by congressional Republicans to which the president is pushing back. But my sister-in-law, back in Pennsylvania, just perfectly laid it out to me over the phone. She described the Republicans’ stance of “give me my terms or I’m shredding the full faith and credit of the United States of America up” as being about as maniacal and subversive a threat, culturally speaking, as anything our country has ever faced. It’s of a leverage that makes Joseph Stalin, or Mao Tse-tung or Adolf Hitler, even from their grave, pine and reinvigorate.
Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, be ye careful of what you’re conjuring up.
Unbelievable, from the very bowels of our country, this is happening.
