Chamber to hold cruise ship policy luncheon

The event, scheduled for Sept. 12, will be open to member businesses

The Homer Chamber of Commerce is bringing back their luncheons as a way to interface with Homer’s business community — and first up is a discussion on the city’s consideration of a cruise ship policy.

Chamber members are invited to the luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 12 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Aspen Hotel’s Raven Room to hear an update from Homer’s Port and Harbor on cruise ship operations and logistics from this year and to participate in a discussion as the City of Homer considers creating and implementing policy.

“Our goal with this is to try to help our members understand more the logistics involved in working with cruise ships,” Chamber Executive Director Brad Anderson said. “It’s much more complicated than most people realize … so we want to have the chance to review the things that we’ve learned this past year.”

Both the Port and Harbor Advisory Commission and the Economic Development Advisory Commission were tasked by the city council earlier this year to conduct conversations with city staff and stakeholders to facilitate policy consideration.

“We’re helping them in that outreach effort to the (business) community,” Anderson said.

Anderson noted that Homer Port Director Bryan Hawkins, Community Development Director Julie Engebretsen and council member Shelly Erickson will also be present at the meeting.

Following the presentation by city staff, the floor will open to questions from attending members.
